About
Meet the Artist
Hi, I’m Alister Rubenstein (they/it), the founder of The Crafty Queer! I’m a self-taught artist deeply committed to creating art that reflects the lived experiences of systemically excluded communities. My journey has been shaped by my experiences as a queer and trans person in recovery, as well as my disability identity and growing up in foster care. These experiences fuel my passion for creating art that celebrates queer joy, resilience, and visibility while also serving as a tool for empowerment and healing.
The Story Behind The Crafty Queer
The Crafty Queer started as a personal project when I realized how hard it was to find cards and gifts that celebrated queer, trans, and recovery milestones. I began making my own at my kitchen table and sharing with friends, and what started as a small creative outlet has since grown into a full-fledged business offering:
✨ Tattoos – Affirming, inclusive, and rooted in self-determination
✨ Jewelry & Pins – Handmade pieces that celebrate identity
✨ Art Prints & Stickers – Queer joy, activism, and visibility in every design
✨ And more!
Every piece I create is designed to uplift, empower, and celebrate the LGBTQ+ community and those in recovery.
What Drives My Work
At its core, The Crafty Queer is about more than just art—it’s about creating space for queer and trans people to feel seen, valued, and empowered. My mission is to craft pieces that:
🌈 Spark joy and self-expression
🌈 Affirm and celebrate identity
🌈 Encourage activism and community care
I believe art and activism go hand in hand. Through The Crafty Queer, I aim to spread love, raise awareness, and contribute to a more affirming world for all queer people. Here is the full version of our mission and values.
Life Beyond the Studio
When I’m not tattooing or creating, you can usually find me:
💖 Crocheting for fun (fiber arts bring me so much joy!)
💖 Practicing shibari as a form of meditative creativity
💖 Moderating support groups for trans folks and those in recovery
I recently bought a house in Troy, NY, painted it rainbow, and share it with my two partners and four cats—living my best, bright queerest life.
